Breastfeeding Information

Is there anything I need before I deliver?

Here is a list of a few items that are helpful to have before you deliver:

  • Nursing Bras - 2-3 regular nursing bras and 1-2 sleep/comfy bras Best time to be measured is during your 8th month
  • Nursing Pads - These are in case you leak. It''s good to get some ahead of time. These are items that are not typically given to you at the hospital. Not all women leak and this leaking is not an indication of whether you have a large milk supply. I recommend getting some disposable and some washable
  • Nursing Pillow - Many women find these to be comfortable when they nurse. They are not a necessity, however. You may find it more comfortable to nurse without a pillow. It is very individual.
  • Nipple Cream - Many hospitals will give you a small tube of Ultra-Purified Lanolin when you deliver. This is good to keep your nipples from becoming very dry. It can also be soothing. Many of our moms here love the Motherlove Nipple Cream, which also has many herbs that are soothing as well as healing.
  • Books - A good breastfeeding book is a good idea to have. It can answer many questions that may arise. It is also a good idea to have a good baby book. My personal favorite is The Baby Book by William Sears. If there was a manual for new parents...this would be it!
  • Breastpump - I included this only because many women come in and think they must have a pump before they deliver. It may be a good idea to become familiar with the different pumps just in case you may need one or if you will be returning to work. If you are planning to breastfeed, all you need is you and your baby! A pump is not a necessity to breastfeed, though it can be nice to have if you want to have someone else feed the baby at times,or if you are returning to work.
