My Story  “We are so glad you’re here and we’re so glad we found you” is something we frequently hear when parents come through our doors. What started as a pump rental station in my home 10 years ago has evolved into a warm and nurturing environment for new families. Twenty-two years ago, as an Obstetrical nurse at Evanston Hospital and as a new mother myself, I realized there were few resources available for new mothers in the community. Breastfeeding in the early 1980’s was making a resurgence in some communities; however the “art of breastfeeding” had partially disappeared due to deep-rooted cultural attitudes surrounding bottle-feeding. The need for accurate evidence based information to assist women with breastfeeding resulted in the birth of the lactation field and by the 1990’s, many hospitals began employing Lactation Consultants to help their patients succeed. Research conducted by scientists studying breastfed babies revealed that there was no substitute for human milk and also led to the 1997 American Academy’s statement, recommending babies be breastfed for a minimum of 1 year. I raised my 3 children as a stay at home mom until they were in school. In 1996, I became a certified Lactation Consultant. For the past 10 years, I worked as a Lactation Consultant in the hospital and in a private practice setting. Three years ago, I visualized creating a “one stop shop”, where parents could purchase products, attend classes, network with other parents, and receive individualized consultations. In support of this concept and the growing demand for these services, I relocated my home business to our retail pharmacy, Dundee Pharmacy. The mission statement of New Mother New Baby is to provide a warm, comforting environment for new families along with time-tested high quality products, expert evidence based information and to empower mothers to feel good about themselves and their mothering.
